Our beloved customers: the good, the bad and the cuties!

Dear All,

Sorry for the delay, we're up to many things, getting the logistics of the new suppliers down to pat, new website, new partners for promotions, I know I always say this, but I WILL try my best to update more frequently. It's just that I spend most of my time replying customer emails to give more prompt customer service than update this blog. I promise to manage my time better! So anyway this is a long post to make up for it!

Thanks for your continual support for Genie in a Closet and continued readership of our blog =) This post will be more interesting, it'll be about our customers!

So in the last few months, we've had many different customers and realized that there is a whole host of different 'patterns' of customers. We have met some of you in person; those who came for meet up sessions, or those who visited us during our fleas at Sogurt or Blogshop Festival.

I'll break up this blogpost into three sections; as per the post title!

GOOD

Now, 99% of our customers fall into this category and we love all of you loads! Actually, I think all of our customers fall into this category! The "BAD" customers actually aren't our customers at all, but are people who are scammers, etc. so they're technically actually not our customers =) So first of all, thank you for all the support so far!

So amongst all our loving customers, we have had a few categories that stand out! As you might imagine, most of our customers are females, but we also had some Male customers! Of course, they all buy stuff for their gfs or friends, but it's quite interesting how they approach it.

Some are very clear, and already know what they want, they just send in an order form and pay as per a female customer. But we did have a few that asked for recommendations, sizing help, etc and the most 'cute' male customer was one who sent us photos of his gf's clothes and asked us to recommend some stuff. He even had to go "peep" at the sizes of her existing clothes as well as measure the ptp, waist, length just to make sure that the dress we recommended could fit! So 贴心 right? She must be very lucky!

So guys, if you wanna buy something for your friend or girlfriend, feel free to email us, and we'll be glad to help you with any questions!

Now another category of customers that surprised us was overseas customers. We didn't expect to receive many overseas customers so we were quite shocked when we have our first overseas order just a few months into running the business. It seems facebook is indeed international!

Alex always tells me that "we are an MNC leh" because we sell worldwide and have a global presence >.< He kept playing this song after we had our first "international sale".

So anyway we have had overseas customers from Malaysia, Australia, Canada, USA and even UK! I guess our clothes featured are nicer and definitely cheaper for the non-asian countries. Can someone recommend their friends in Africa and Antartica(?) to buy from us? Then we can claim we have sold to every continent in the world. =/ hehehe

So anyway, back to the main bulk of our customers, the fantastic females from Singapore!

We love all of you and all the great feedback and encouragement that you've given us! From tips and suggestions on how to improve our business, to kind feedback on our clothes and customer service is something that really drives us forward!

I used to think that is was very cliche whenever they interviewed successful entrepreneurs about what's their motivation and they reply "our customers". But having received some really nice words of encouragement from so many of you, Alex & I really feel very touched. It really makes us want to work even harder to fulfill all your sartorial wishes!

Now, I don't want to be hao lian but I've just randomly screen shot some messages we received that from fb, email or through the inquiry page. Of course we love and appreciate all the kind feedback that all of you have left us, even if we didn't post your message here :)

She's really nice and courteous to us in every message to us, even in her next few purchases! It feels like we're the customers :)

This is memorable, as she is actually a friend of Alex's friend but both didn't know. She actually told her friends about this new online store and Alex's friend messaged him on FB to tell him about it.
It was just a random FB message to us, but we really appreciated it!
She always instagrams us and introduces new customers to us, we love seeing her photos :)
Another satisfied customer :)

Anyway, enough of the self-praise hee, what Alex & I enjoy doing now before every collection launch is doing a mini prediction game. Having operated GC for about a year now, we do have a loyal base of customers and we actually know what some of our loyal customers like to buy.

Some like bling stuff and anything shiny and glittery, some like sweet lacey stuff and some like a certain colour. Some only buy a certain cut/style of a dress, etc. We always "bet" that XX will buy this, or when we're sourcing for new clothes, I will tell Alex, I'm bringing in this item for XX and XX coz they'll definitely love it!

We find great fun in doing this, and especially when we're correct! As time goes by, it seems we're getting better at this! Maybe we're boring people and easily tickled, but it really amuses us =) So if you like a certain style, or kind of clothes do feel free to let us know. We'll definitely take all your suggestions into consideration!

BAD

As mentioned above, none of our customers fall under this category, and I find it hard to place anyone inside. All our customers are really nice and we haven't really met any unreasonable customer (so far?) and we hope we don't in the future!

Out of the thousands of order forms we've received, we definitely had some dead buyers, but what we really wanted to point out was scamming. So far, we only had one scammer.

She sent in an order form, and claimed to have transferred money, even print screening her IB transfer. Of course, we do conscientiously check each transfer and of course didn't see any funds received. We did question her about it, and her "suspicious" screen shot in which she didn't provide her ibanking nick.

Of course, she disappeared and didn't reply. Giving her the benefit that she transferred to someone else for something else and accidentally thought it was us, she would at least reply and said oops sorry I made a mistake and I don't want the item anymore. But she just disappeared.

Maybe the email account was compromised, and someone else is using it, but either way, do look out for that email account if you're buying or re-selling as we believe a scammer is currently using it.

Alex says we should send a piece of shit to her house. But perhaps he/she is playing a prank on the address they provided, so we decided not to. Anyway, I of course wouldn't do that even if I knew the scammers "real" address >.< Alex comes up with really strange ideas sometimes.

CUTIES

While we love all our beloved customers, and try to remember all of you, there are a few customers that 'stand' out from the rest.

Of course, the customers that we remember very clearly are those that buy very regularly from us, as we have to pack and write their addresses every time they order. One particular customer was very 'cute', she kept adding orders everyday, over a period of 5 days, choosing one or two more items each time and eventually we had a huge parcel to send to her.

Do note that it's best to consolidate your orders as if you're sending by registered mail, you'll only have to pay the $2.24 charge once. So if you want to order more items, remember to email us quickly as we mail out items daily :)

Other customers that stand out would also those that buy many items in one go. We remember them clearly coz we have to use brown paper to wrap it. We do have a few polymailer sizes right now, but even the largest can't fit 8-10 items. Especially with our premium line of items we bring it now, each item is of quality material so it's really thick.

The parcel only contained 5 or 6 items, but it already cost us the maximum $3.35 to post out >.< To be fair, it did contain one of our premium blazers.

We have some really cute customers who give us really cute replies and emails whenever they send in order forms or receive their items, etc. Here's an example of one of them.

Her first payment slip was so cute. And of course, in all following correspondences with her, she always brightened up our day with her wacky emails! All you cute customers cheer us up :)

Another customer "type" that surprise as are the quick payers. And we mean REALLY QUICK payment. While a typical "fast paying" customer would pay about a few minutes after receiving their invoice, we have had a few customers who pay literally within seconds.

The moment we send them the email invoice, we receive an IMMEDIATE payment email. It's like whatsapp, their reply is immediate, as we see the "sent message" by gmail we receive a new email from them! We suspect that they already calculated all the costs and got everything ready in their ibanking, only awaiting our confirmation that the item is in stock and they'll click transfer and copy paste the details to us.

A random note: Do remember to send us your Mailing Address details with your payment particulars. Many customers pay and forgot to include their address. We verify immediately but can't send out due to lack of an address. We understand that some of you babes are very busy with school and work, and don't check email so regularly, so we sometimes have many parcels lying around our office waiting for an address. We don't mind the space it takes up (at least for now) but we're only worried that you babes will receive the item later than expected. We pride ourselves in daily mailing so that our customers can receive their items ASAP.

So to end off, do provide us any feedback that you have and we'll gladly take it into consideration to improve your shopping experience with us. Thank you again for our support so far and MERRY X'MAS!

I know what I've been blogging about is mostly centred around Genie in a Closet, but as I better understand the business and manage my time better, I promise to have more of a life and blog more about other stuff! Food, make up regimes, skin care, etc. So do stay tuned!

Blogshop Festival

Hi everyone!

As promised, today's post is going to be about our flea event at the inaugural Blogshop Festival held last 23rd June. It was quite exciting for us, as it was our first "flea" and actually only "real" flea that we went to, and we did not know what to expect. It was organized by For Flea Sake and held at Club Avatar.

We didn't really care much about whether sales would be good but we just wanted people to know more about us! We spent the whole night prior packing and disassembling the rack and getting everything ready.
Badly photoshopped photo that we posted on fb cause we were in a rush
We had like so so so many things to bring, it was quite a headache just moving the short distances from my home to the taxi and from the hotel taxi stand to the actual event space. That being said, we didn't bother to bring any camera, we already had so many things to carry! So I'm just stealing pictures from the internet =)

An illustration; we brought 3 huge suitcases, plus a carrier box for our rack!

Being kiasu, we reached there really early! The event starts at 1pm, but merchants were told to reach at 12pm so that they could set up. We knew people would go early to book the best spots so we reached there before 11am =) But... there were already two merchants there before us!

A short queue formed at about 11am. The merchants were complaining to the organizers that they should let us in since everyone was already there waiting.. After much complaining and some time spent waiting in line, we were allowed in before 12pm =)

Yay, we were among the featured blogshops on the banner hanging outside!

Leading to the event space

Entrance of the event space

As you can see it was quite dark, and being a Club, the floors were really sticky and quite dirty =( I'd like to think that it was just stains from food and drinks and not anything else! We took about an hour to get everything up and ready for sale! As mentioned, none of the photos were taken by us as we didn't bring a camera but I managed to find photos with me and our "stall" from the internet! GO GOOGLE IMAGES!

I think we had the largest rack that day

Our 'stall' even split over to where our suitcases of stock and table was
But the crowd was quite good, and we had surprisingly very good sales that day =) YAY! Alex was in charge of the money and finding inventory from the suitcases so he was quite a mess when the crowd was super hot at about 2-3pm. I was constantly answering customers inquiries, and he was finding stuff and changing money non-stop for that period.

REALLY SUPER CROWDED, EVERYONE WAS SQUEEZING NECK TO NECK and had trouble walking! It was like morning rush in the train, except everyone was moving around!

This was when it was less crowded already!
Unfortunately, we did lose 3 items during the sale =( I'm hoping that people mistakenly took it during the mad rush of crowd and no one intentionally stole our items! >=( But we were still happy with the sales of that day!

The 2 photos above were taken by Blogshop Magazine! Even though it was posed, it was really quick, and I was still waiting to attend to a customer so I think I look quite bad in them =( And I didn't put much make up that day too, didn't know got photo op! I should really photoshop the picture but I'm too lazy to =X

Anyway, the lovely blogger kiyo was the DJ for the event, and her stall was next to us! Maybe that's why our sales were so good? haha. Here's a chio photo of her to end the post!

Fee Fie Fo Fum.. FLEA?

Dear All,

Sooo sorry for the hiatus in blogging. We were pretty busy with finding new suppliers so that we can bring more pretty clothes for our customers! We're also planning newer and bigger things that will be coming your way in the next few months, so do stay tuned to our blog and facebook page for more updates!!!

Anyway... we've been owing a blogpost to the good guys and gals at Mayhem Productions and Sogurt for inviting us to their Bukit Timah branch for a FREE flea. Yes, FREE OF CHARGE! While other organizers charge you $50-$100 a day, we were lucky enough to be invited to the swanky Sogurt Bukit Timah for free! And we were there for a long time, from 3-9pm!

Store front of Sogurt Bukit Timah
Our enormous rack and our awesome handmade, wrapped up sign

$10 bargain bin, featuring some stuff that we do not sell online

Thank you everyone who came down and supported us! We were so busy there manning the stall and as well as manning our online store that we forgot to take photos with all the lovely sogirls there that day =(
But we did snap a photo of a picture of all the chio bu sogirls hanging on their wall!

Got rainbow somemore!

While we did not eat any yogurt there, we did eat their waffles! We were there for so many hours, we were so cold we didn't want anything cold so we opted for some warm toasted waffles =) Alex was greedy and didn't even remember to take a picture, so here's a stolen picture that I randomly found off the internet of their crispy waffles!

I don't lnow what filling this is
We mixed chocolate and peanut butter inside, yummy! To be honest, the taste of the waffle itself was a little bland, and I know of a few bakeries that make better tasting plain waffles. But they were generous with the chocolate and peanut butter so that was the main taste!

=) mmm... and the best thing was, the waffle was toasted so thoroughly it was SO CRISPY! We were kind of hungry and were wondering why the waffles took so long.. it was because they toasted them! TO PERFECTION! I never had such a nicely toasted waffle before in my whole life! Even those freshly made waffles from Prima Deli aren't so crispy, because Sogurt literally toasts them in a toaster thingy before serving them piping hot to you!

Anyway, we had an offer going on, so if you bought some sogurt, you got 10% off our products of if you bought something from us, you'd get 10% off sogurt! So awesome right? Eat and shop and enjoy at the same time! To be clear, no one paid us or requested us to write this post =)

For more information on Sogurt or Mayhem Productions, or directions to Sogurt Bukit Timah just click on them <-- I've already added hyper-links!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fleas are a great way to meet our customers who come down or get new customers, but it's super tiring. Did you see the size of our rack? Assembling and disassembling it takes like 10-15 minutes each time and its mad heavy! So for this Sogurt Flea we:

1) Disassembled it and packed it at home
2) Reached sogurt and assembled it
3) Disassembled it and packed it to head home
4) Reached home and reassembled it

Luckily for me, I didn't do much, Alex was the one that carried, assembled and disassembled it! By the way, assembled is a super hard word to spell! We also had to hang up all the clothes and take them off their hangers, and had to repack all the clothes... SUPER TIRING! Not to mention so heavy to bring all the clothes and hangers to and fro!

I'll blog about our Flea at Blogshop Festival the next post! And I promise to blog more regularly =)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Studio Set up / Out of the Pan

Hi everyone!

As mentioned in my last post, we are in the midst of setting up a new photostudio! Actually, we already started shooting. If you see Collection 18, I'm actually the model =] Anyway, for photography both of us are totally newbies and had no idea what/how to do. All we knew was what we "偷学"ed from the previous photographers who took our photos. We spent a long time researching what we needed to buy and what brand/model is good. After we FINALLY decided on the camera model and the studio set up and models, we had another tough task; WHERE to buy from!

So we decided on a Nikon D90, and a simple 3X 250W studio set up.

We scoured the net, asked friends and went through countless clubsnap forum posts looking for reviews etc, so afraid that we might overpay for something. After calling up the various vendors for a quote, we headed to Funan / Peninsular Plaza area to get our stuff. More about our studio in future posts!

On the subject of photography, I wanna share a story Alex related to me. One day in primary school when he was p3 or p4, his teacher came into the room and wrote on the blackboard the word "photography". She then proceeded to ask everyone how to pronounce it. I guess everyone at that age already knew how to pronounce words like photo and photography so everyone was like:

All 40 students went down the row and replied "pho-tou-gra-phee". Well, the teacher then said, "You are all wrong." Everyone, including Alex, who got A for English and though his English was really good (he always hao lian to me), was puzzled.

And I realized, I had pronounced it wrongly before too! C'mon admit it, how many of you pronounce it that way too? How about Geography? =)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After getting our stuff, we ate at 'Out of the Pan' at B1 of Raffles City Shopping Centre. They were having a 1 for 1, so it seemed like quite a good deal.

The last time I ate at this location; the open area near the fountain at B1, I remember the pasta was really good. I can't remember if it is the same restaurant but they now only serve crepes. We took a quick browse at the menu on the wall outside and I thought they served seafood and other stuff. Didn't realize it was only crepe filling/flavours >.<

Don't get me wrong, the crepes were quite good. Really thin crepes which were pretty tasty! I had the red-wine stewed beef and Alex had the ham & mushroom one. They cost about $15 each, but 1 for 1 means they cost $15 together =) Of course you still need to add your +10% service charge and +7% GST.

Ham & Mushroom - Alex is still new to the D90, he focused on the veges instead of the crepes

Red Wine Stewed Beef - really tender and succulent, quite generous servings of beef

The tomato-based sauce that came with the ham & mushroom was really great! But Alex's portions of ham and mushroom were quite pathetic when compared to my pieces of beef. Don't be fooled by the pictures, most of the crepe is still stuffed with lettuce, and thus not really filling. It was fine for me, but Alex was still super hungry after eating it and went on to a nearby bakery to buy bread after the meal.

In his own words, the crepe is an "over-glorified subway sandwich". Great for those on a diet, but definitely not filling for a hungry person.

Actually, I have 2 pairs of this earrings. Alex bought one pair of me for my birthday, and not too long after my relatives actually bought a same pair for me from Europe! At that time I had already worn the pair bought in Singapore so there's no exchanging. Anyway I think you can't exchange earrings? I was still in hectic SMU at that point of time, so I didn't really have the time to go and exchange it. Only remembered I had it recently when I was searching for accessories to match my outfits for the photoshoot!

Been wanting to sell the earrings on ebay or something but since we've reached 3000 likes in a relatively short period of time, we've decided to reward our facebook fans! We also have other giveaway plans to reward those who like us on facebook so GO LIKE AND SHARE NOW!!! =)

P.S. Collection 19 previews will be up on facebook tonight!

Really like the effect of the words; photoshop level up!

Introduction Part 2

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the brief first post. Still busy trying to set up the studio and perfect it. We DIY-ed some portions so we're trying to work things out =) More about it in future posts!

Anyway, I thought I'd go into further details about Alex and I, and the work that each of us does at Genie in a Closet.

For me, I handle all the fun aspects of the blogshop; like choosing of clothes, reviewing of models and designing of posters, layout of the website, etc.

Photo editing on my 27" iMac is love!

I also mainly handle all order form emails and customer inquiries, but when you guys send  us emails past 1am, Alex would be the one replying you. We try our best to provide the best customer service and try to instantly reply any emails we get. But we've had order forms coming in as late as 4am! Reminds me of students rushing project deadlines =X

Order forms at 4am! We do have a number of customers who send in orders at wee hours in the morning.

For Alex, he will handle moving and carrying of all things heavy, liaising with external parties, financial accounts, and all advertising related stuff. After our studio is perfected, he'll have a new job; photographer!

hehe =)

We're trying to learn each others jobs in case if one is sick or not around (e.g. Alex going back to army) the business can still operate normally. Preparation of customer orders, stock takes and sending out of parcels are handled by the both of us =)

Polymailers > Paper Envelopes

I love polymailers! They are strong, waterproof and are almost impossible to tear. They also come with a self-adhesive seal, but to be kiasu, I always cover the seal with another layer of thick scotch tape. Speaking of mailing, those who opted for meet ups should know that we are based at Queenstown area. But did you know that Queenstown does not have any post office?

The nearest is at Redhill, 1.6km away! We always have to cycle there, and when we have loads to send out, it becomes quite difficult. We mail daily, so I guess we're getting exercise daily! Even if there's only normal mail to send out, we'll go over to the Post Office as we think it's more reliable than a posting box.

Maybe I should go meet my MP and ask him the above question =X Anyway, just a quick Genieinacloset update! We are glad to announce that we have managed to restock some of our popular and sold out items from current collections and also have same extras from our last backorder! Do check them out @ http://genieinacloset.livejournal.com/13908.html#cutid1

The items are available now, so do get them if you missed out the last time. We only have limited quantities for each item!

Lots of love,
Yanling
